Sides, Desserts & Drinks To Go With Your Cuban Pig Roast

Cuban pig roastWe all love a Cuban pig roast and it has always been the star of outdoor barbecue parties and special events such as weddings, birthdays and family get-togethers. Indeed, it gives us so much pleasure right from the moment it’s set on the grill up to the very second when its crispy skin touches our mouths. Really delicious! But do you know what will make a Cuban pig roast even more delightful? A Cuban menu to go with it! Here are our suggestions for sides, desserts and drinks to make your backyard party a blast.

Side Dishes

1. Arroz Azafran / Saffron Rice

We know rice isn’t a side dish but hey, it really goes well with roast pork so let us add this on the list. Rice is cooked in saffron and broth then transferred to a skillet. It will be cooked over medium heat until it’s already golden brown. Onion, garlic and salt are combined with the rice for additional flavor.

2. Calabaza a la Parilla

Of course we can’t do without veggies! Whisk olive oil and vinegar and drizzle it over some calabaza (butternut squash will also do) slices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste and cook until they’re brown.

3. Papa Rellenas

Some people say that these are the Cuban counterpart of the Shepherd’s pie. They’re simply stuffed, boiled potatoes. The stuffing is made from green pepper, onion, garlic and ground beef. It’s flavored with a number of spices such as salt, cumin and pepper together with tomato paste and vinegar.

4. Frijoles Colorados

Surely we can’t forget about the famous Cuban red beans. It’s a dish made from red kidney beans and rice with ham for a meaty taste. It’s a hearty soup made even tastier with oregano, cumin, ground pepper, tomato sauce, onion, red pepper and salt to taste.

Sauces

1. Papaya Mango Salsa

Now just to add a kick on your menu, make a light and refreshing papaya mango salsa! Combine diced mangoes and papaya, red onion, minced garlic, cider vinegar, salt, black pepper, currants and cilantro leaves. This really goes well with pork. Yummy!

2. Chimichurri Sauce

This Cuban / Latin sauce and grilled dishes are a match made in heaven! Create a puree of fresh Italian parsley, red wine vinegar, olive oil, fresh cilantro, garlic cloves, cumin, crushed red pepper and salt.

Desserts

1. Churros

Who doesn’t love churros? These cinnamon flavored pastries are paired with a mouth-watering chocolate sauce. Who would say no? Definitely not us!

2. Chifles

Chifles are simply fried plantains. Yes, they’re not sweet. In fact, these are fried in vegetable oil then drizzled with salt. However, they’re still considered desserts.

3. Helado de Coctel de Frutas

We can’t go without tropical fruits, can we? This dessert is made from fruit cocktail, orangey soda and condensed milk. It’s like ice cream, only a little lighter and of course, filled with tropical fruit chunks. To get the recipe, simply click the link above.

Beverages

1. Mojito

Mix mojito for your guests to make the party even more enjoyable. You can serve this with or without alcohol or even incorporate different flavors such as watermelon, cranberry, strawberry and many others.

2. Cuba Libre

As the name implies, this is really a solid Cuban drink. It’s a combination of rum, coke and lime. To make it really speak for itself, make sure the rum you’ll use is made in Cuba.

3. Rum Punch

So this one’s a lighter than the other two above. To make this beverage, you can combine lime juice, pineapple juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, grenadine and light rum. There goes your punch! Serve with ice cubes, of course!
